Half of the time I ask someone if they know what Reiki is, they say “yes.” The other half – “no.” But the awareness, and most importantly, the use of Reiki is becoming more and more mainstream. What is Reiki? Simply put, it is healing energy work.
Reiki translated in Japanese is ‘God Light Energy’. Dr. Mikao Usui founded the Usui System of Natural Healing. The story of how it evolved can be found here. This system of healing is what we refer to today as Reiki.
My Reiki Experience
Following my own Reiki certification I purchased a book to have on hand for friends with questions. It turned out to be quite the gem. “The Reiki Healing Bible” by Janet Green shares her personal journey into healing as well as the basics and history. It should answer the majority of questions you might have and I personally recommend it.
My experience with Reiki began after I had been attacked in Savannah, Georgia. I immediately knew something was wrong inside of me. The anxiety I experienced afterward was through the roof. My then boyfriend would call ahead to tell me he was on his way. He would even tell me he would be there in ten minutes. The moment he would let himself in the front door, I would be so startled I would scream. I felt like I was living in a glass mason jar. Everything looked the same but I couldn’t quite catch my breath.
I can’t remember who recommended Reiki to me, but I had never heard of it before that. Desperate circumstances called for desperate measures So, I found a local practitioner and scheduled a session. We had a brief conversation beforehand and she explained that there would be no physical contact between us. I would relax and lie on a massage table while she worked. Unsure of what to expect, I did as requested.
The Reiki practitioner started at my head. Even though my eyes were closed, I could feel a warm almost tingling sensation as she worked from the top of my head downward. When she moved down to the lower part of my abdomen, my legs slowly went numb. I remember thinking, “if she doesn’t pull whatever this is through my body, I won’t be able to get up and walk away from this table.”
She stayed in that same area for what felt like forever. But as she moved down through my body, she did pull ‘it’ through. And thus, the numbing, paralyzed feeling left. Suddenly I heard her tell me to relax for a few minutes. She told me she would meet me in the sitting area with a glass of water when I was ready. So, I did take a bit of time to collect myself before joining her.
I had told her prior to the session what had happened and what I had been experiencing in the aftermath. She handed me the water and asked if I felt better. I replied, “very much so.” I couldn’t help but comment on the paralyzed feeling I had during her session. The Reiki practitioner then explained that my sacral chakra was blocked. This is the chakra that represents our reproductive organs, as well as our sexuality.
Evidently the trauma that I had experienced manifested itself in this chakra blocking the energy entering and leaving. If you are unfamiliar with the seven chakras, this diagram will help. Reiki works with this chakra system to ensure that a positive, healing energy is consistently flowing though the body. This continuous flow of energy in the body adds to our overall physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
I made another session after that day. And then another. It opened up a whole new arena of self awareness and healing that I had never known before. That was the beginning of my own spiritual journey.
I knew that I wanted to learn Reiki for myself. However, it would be another 12 years before I would have the opportunity to receive formal training. But in all fairness, the scenario found me. I had moved to Vegas in 2013. Soon thereafter, I found a great massage therapist. Having asked her if she was familiar with Reiki, she connected me with the Reiki Master from whom I would obtain my attunement and training.
Reiki has become a daily part of my life since. I’m amazed at all the ways in which you can use it. I’ve brought plants back to life from near death. Had friends phone from across the country and even provided distance Reiki successfully. Furthermore, I practice on myself regularly.
During my level II training I was thrilled to discover that you can use Reiki on rooms. From children’s bedrooms to conference rooms, Reiki has been used to reduce nightmares and break the tension in board meetings. Admittedly, I chuckled when I first heard about this. But you can’t argue with true-to-life testimonials.
The most incredible part of Reiki for me has been how I feel after I give someone else a session. I personally feel lighter and brighter. It’s as if channeling healing energy for others renews me in the process. It is hard not to want to help others when you yourself are blessed too. It’s a win-win situation for all involved.
So, if you hear about Reiki on the street, know that there is validity to the practice. I’m living, breathing proof. And it never hurts to try, especially if you have a need for healing yourself. Remember body, mind and soul are all connected. If you are experiencing ‘dis-ease’ of the mind or soul, it can manifest as disease in your body. Take care of you!
